The brief was to create a bespoke, eye-catching exterior custom tile mural, which we were thrilled to help with. We provided a swift response to his enquiry whilst delivering superior products, bringing Nigel’s vision to life.
Our custom tiles were adorned with a design created by artist, Robert Dawson who delivered the large-scale exterior tile art installation for Nigel and Kati Massey. The design encompassed the historical brickwork of the surrounding Victorian homes whilst reimagining traditional tiling. This accentuated the property’s individuality among the other more traditional built houses. Nestled within the Victorian-era houses in South London, the single-story building replaced a row of old garages.
The bespoke mural project was part of a larger job in which Nigel worked with architects, Edgely Design. They designed the house to have a strong relationship with the garden without the use of too many doors, making Nigel and Kati’s dream a reality.
Nigel commented on the experience: “It has been fantastic to work with what was once a local company. As a Stoke lad, it was great to talk to Mark about home and all about ceramics. Whilst I am familiar with the industry, having used ceramics as a material in my artwork, Digital Ceramics Custom Tiles’ fascinating process was new to me.”
The finished custom design slowly reveals two levels to passers-by. The artwork engages people because the vision develops as they walk past the house. According to Nigel, he often overhears children admire the design and cars stop in the street to have a look. He added: “It is quite incredible to get this reaction, as an artist.
“We wanted to ensure our home developed a relationship with the neighbouring buildings. Kati and I believe this has been achieved and we are blown away by the reaction of the local community. The tile artwork has brought life to the modern home design and has given a nod to the surrounding Victorian architecture.”
The tiles that were chosen for the project were 30cm2. Part of the process included reglazing the tiles with an anti-slip glaze which was made to the architect’s specification.
This made them commercially wear rated and scratch resistant, which is crucial as they were installed to the exterior of Nigel’s house.
The ambitious project has been shortlisted for an Architects Journal (AJ) Architecture Award, in the category of ‘Projects under £500,000’. The judges will consider each project in detail – such as how it has met or exceeded the brief, how it has promoted client or community engagement, and how it has excelled in the use of space or sense of place. The AJ Architecture Awards event will return on 17 November 2021 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House, London.
On his new build project being nominated for the architect award, Nigel said: “It is very flattering to have your work recognised as we didn’t intend on winning any awards for craftmanship and design. We worked to complete it to the best of our ability. As an artist your work is only usually recognised if you put designs out there at exhibitions.”
Three Gardens by Edgely Design has also been shortlisted for another accolade, The Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Awards 2021, with the winner to be announced 2 December.
