International British sculptor and mosaic artist, Anne Schwegmann-Fielding had been working on a commission to revamp the toilets inside Colchester Arts Centre, a performance venue based in a beautiful old church, when she got in touch with the team at DCCT. She commissioned us to print, decorate and fire the toilets, as well as supply ceramic transfers for her to create the mosaic elements.
We had worked with Anne on a previous project, called ‘Our Eric’, so she was familiar with our knowledgeable, end-to-end approach. Following an in-depth conversation with her at the beginning of the first lockdown, the project to transform Colchester Art Centre’s toilets into ‘the new Cistern Chapel’ began.
Anne’s proposal included creating a series of wall mosaics and mirrors using donated willow pattern plates and other blue crockery from the local community.
Along with this, photo transfers of past performers, posters and events spanning the Art Centre’s history were incorporated. The porcelain tiles also featured pennies which represented “spend a penny”, a nod to a period when people had to pay to use the toilet!
Anne said: “When I first worked with Digital Ceramics Custom Tiles for their digital transfer papers, I found them efficient and was pleased with the results. Mark has always been really helpful, friendly and easy to get hold of when we needed him!
“I worked with local artist Shermaine Slocombe on the Colchester Art Centre project, who designed the original digital transfers for the toilets using elements of my design for the mosaics.

The ‘new Cistern Chapel’ mosaics, installed at the Art Centre earlier this year, are now on display so that all visitors can admire the history of Colchester.
