Digital Ceramics transform Dewsbury underpass
We were recently approached by independent artist, Saba Rifat, to help transform a key gateway to Dewsbury Town Centre. The project was commissioned by Beam, a Public Arts charity based in Wakefield, which specialises in delivering transformative arts programmes to inspire communities and support the development of great places.
As part of the Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme, funded by Kirklees Council, Beam approached Saba Rifat with the concept of transforming the underpass with aesthetically pleasing and welcoming artwork. Saba, who was keen to produce the designs, presented hand-drawn, abstract 3D shapes in a variety of bold colours.
Principal Consultant at Beam, Kate Watson commented: “We found Digital Ceramic Custom Tiles through online research and looked through their past projects to find that they had worked with artists like Morag Myerscough. This was really reassuring, and we knew that our project would be in safe hands with them!”
Artist, Saba, was advised that the structure of the underpass could not be compromised during the transformation, so drilling into the walls was not an option. We were pleased to be able to offer the perfect solution with custom-made porcelain tiles to preserve the foundation of the underpass whilst achieving an uplifted look and feel for locals and visitors.
Kate added: “Saba’s brief was to create something permanent and durable – something to make the town feel more welcoming to visitors. We chose to work with Digital Ceramic Custom Tiles after seeing the quality of their previous projects, and we couldn’t recommend them enough!”
Working on the Dewsbury underpass project, we remained transparent and outlined the constraints, discussed solutions, provided samples and translated Saba’s hand-drawn designs onto paper using state-of-the-art digital printing software before waterjet cutting the porcelain tiles.
“They kept us informed throughout and even organised an experienced tiler to complete the installation!”, commented Kate.
We really enjoyed working with Beam and Saba on the Dewsbury underpass project and hope for the opportunity of working with them again in the future.
