A stylish home in Tuscany has been granted a much-needed makeover, with the help of modern design trends such as ceramic tiles.
Pinetta di Roccamare, a small, private community within the town, was once the home of James Bond actor Roger Moore. Most of the homes in Pinetta were built in modernist style in the 1960s and 70s, and inevitably many were showing signs of wear and tear.
Architects Valerio Ferrari and Cinzia Mazzone, a husband-and-wife team and co-principals of Milan based firm VCFN Atelier, purchased an extensive, single-story family home in Pinetta designed by architect Ugo Miglietta. Ferrari and Mazzone gave the house a complete makeover, incorporating elements inspired by their work in stage design, and their love of contemporary fine art.
Many of the new features, such as the shiny, epoxy painted floor by artist Peter Zimmerman, point to the 1970s vibe of Miglietta’s building. Colours and tones are drawn from the surrounding landscape, and the new blends with the old to create a harmonious symphony of styles.
VMCF took an abstract drawing by artist Roberto Matta, (whose work is also exhibited elsewhere in the home) and converted it into a series of custom ceramic tiles to adorn part of the kitchen wall. This is an example of Ferrari and Mazzone’s approach to integrating works of art into a complete design concept. Art works are not merely added-on adornments, they are components within the overall concept.
