The Paseo Arts District in Oklahoma City has acquired a new set of murals that testify to its reputation as the creative soul of the city.
The district, famous for its Spanish-style architecture and its proliferation of art studios,
has a long association with art and has often been credited as ‘the Greenwich Village of Oklahoma’.
Mother and daughter team Nicole and Aztrid Moan have designed the three ceramic murals. These seek to link the past and present of the district by highlighting its artistic connections, old and new. Local artist Scott Henderson created the frames for the three 6-foot-wide murals.
The first mural shows one of Paseo’s oldest and most iconic structures, the Paseo Plunge, a former swimming pool now used as a multi-purpose art venue. Then, the Restaurant Poetry Reading mural recalls the Bohemian lifestyle, with local poets sharing their work in the cafes of old Paseo. The final mural, Paseo Art Walk, is grounded in the present, and shows how the district is still a haven for the artists and creators of Oklahoma in the modern age.
