New ceramic façade at Stuttgart’s Tiffany store

Jewellery company Tiffany’s recently reopened store in Stuttgart’s Dorotheen Quartier has been given a distinctive new façade by architects MDRVD.

The glass walls of the store have been decorated with 3D ceramic diamond shapes – a motif with an obvious link to this renowned jewellery house, famous for its luxury diamond rings.

The ceramic diamond shapes were produced by ceramic manufacturers Koninklijke Tichelaar, the oldest family business in the Netherlands, with a history of custom tile manufacturing stretching back to the 16th Century. They were glazed in nine graded shades, from the familiar robin’s egg blue associated with the Tiffany brand up to a sharp, clean white. The shimmering surface of the diamonds is designed to be a reference to the Favrile Glass developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself.

The designers invisibly attached the ceramic diamonds to the main glass façade, making them appear to hang in mid-air, attempting thereby to create a dream-like effect. They have been arranged in such a way that the interior of the store is not completely obscured, leaving ample spaces for light to shine in, and for window displays to radiate out into the street and beckon potential shoppers.

The artistic possibilities of 3D ceramic custom tile design are virtually endless.
