Choosing the best floor for your restaurant is no simple matter. Here are some factors you should consider:
Durability
Given the amount of foot traffic, durability is a key concern. Then there are the scraping chairs, the spilled food and drink, and the wheels of the dessert trolley.
Cleaning
The kitchen and dining areas are going to get a lot of spillages on a daily basis, and a floor that soaks it all up and takes forever to clean could soon start to smell bad or present hygiene issues.
Looks
The floor should have an attractive design that is in-line with the aesthetics of the restaurant as a whole.
Variety
The lobby might look good with a carpet, whereas the kitchen will more likely need an easy-to-clean, non-slip tiled surface. Lighter, plainer tiles might better suit a kitchen, whereas the dining area may benefit from something patterned and darker hued.
Acoustics
Less obvious, perhaps, but a noisy floor that reflects sound could be unsuitable for a room where a large number of people are chatting.
So, what materials work best? These are some of the options:
Vinyl
This is a relatively low-cost option. Although it meets the requirements, it has a relatively short lifespan and will need replacing after around ten years.
Wood
Wooden floors look amazing, but maintenance can be difficult. Hardwood floors will need to be annually stripped and resealed with polyurethane, making them less than ideal for a busy restaurant. Other options such as bamboo or cork may be easier to maintain.
Carpet
Carpets are great for softening the acoustic, and create a warm and homely feel. Unfortunately, they do require a lot of care and deep cleaning, which makes them less than ideal for areas with a lot of food and drink spillage.
Ceramic and porcelain tiles
These are a great choice thanks to their durability and versatility. They can be made in a wide variety of designs, can be slip-resistant, do not crack easily, and are very easy to clean.
