Tiles prominent in Jersey restaurant makeover

Jersey’s oldest Chinese restaurant, The Rice Bowl, has been a popular eating place for over forty years, and has recently undergone an exciting makeover featuring custom tiles.

This well-loved family business in St. Clements, has acquired a new look following work by A|NY architecture and design studio. The studio’s approach has aimed at blending innovation with nostalgia, and combining elements of Chinese aesthetics with features that accentuate and incorporate the picturesque natural setting.

Tiles of various kinds are a key feature in the new design. Hardy porcelain floor tiles have been used in areas vulnerable to the demands of the coastal environment, where frost could be a problem with tiles made from more porous materials. The green-glaze, 3D custom ceramic tiles in the bar area are an evocation of traditional Chinese ceramics, while the brick floor tiles used in some areas of the restaurant intend to recall Chinese clay roof tiles.

Natural colours for floors and walls have been selected to enhance and reflect the colours of the coastal setting. Moreover, natural limewash paint has been used on the walls, to harmonize with the natural colours visible through the large windows on the beachside edge of the building.
