A family home in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States has been given a thorough remodelling, with custom tiles playing a large role in the new design.
Victoria Sass of Prospect Refuge Studio, working with architect Sarah Nymo and custom tile designer Kristen Falkirk, has given the house a drastic makeover, with nostalgia as a pervasive theme. Motifs evoking the old Midwest give the home a unique character. The homeowner grew up on a Midwest farm, and this is referenced many times in the design.
The design includes two strikingly unusual but effective uses of tiling. The kitchen backsplash has custom tiles carrying motifs based on the map of Minnesota and its famous lakes. The tiles display the contours of the blue lakes on a warm green background, creating a jumbled version of the Minnesota landscape.
Another striking use of tiling can be found in the powder room. Again, rustic nostalgia is the guiding principle, with an old-world needlepoint design recreated in small floor tiles. The simple pattern contains four heart-shapes, representing the four family members.
Nostalgia is designed to be a theme throughout the whole house, evoking the past and the family’s long connection to the Midwest. However, more contemporary design elements combine with this nostalgia with the intention of creating a modern living space deeply rooted in a rich local tradition.
