Whether tiling forms a major or minor component of your design, the colour of the tiles must always be chosen with great care.
Contrasting sets of tiles should harmonize with each other, and all the tiles used must blend with other elements of the design such as furnishings, carpets, and painted areas.
Contrasting colours need not be clashing colours, unless the artist intends a “colour dissonance” as a means of creating a particular effect.
In most cases, though, colours need to be very carefully matched. The good news is that the latest printing techniques used on ceramic tiles enable precision colour-matching. Colours can be fine-tuned to match other colours in the design, providing the perfect blend and avoiding unwanted clashes.
The 60-30-10 rule still holds good for most projects. Your dominant colour should cover around 60% of the surface, a secondary colour around 30% and an accent shade around 10%. These proportions create a sense of balance and poise needed for most interior designs.
Of course, you need to choose the right three colours for the 60-30-10 rule to work. You may use three shades of the same colour: for example, three shades of blue, with the lightest as the dominant colour and the darkest as the accent shade. Or, you may want to combine different colours which sit well together.
The analogous colour scheme is another tried and tested principle. The three colours chosen will be adjacent on a standard colour wheel. In many cases, the colours will share a primary colour, for example, three different orange shades containing different proportions of red or yellow. Another example might be blue, blue-purple, and purple, with the two purple shades containing different amounts of red.
