From architects to experts in interiors, designers planning rooms often opt for tiles as a floor finish. Hardwearing and available in an endless array of styles and colours, tiles are also built to last making them a sound investment for design budgets. When preparing to create a tiled area, an essential step is to measure for floor tiles, and in this blog we look at the process in detail.
Take measurements
Start by drawing a rough sketch of the floor area you intend to tile on paper, or a tablet if you prefer a digital approach. Next, use a standard measuring tape or electronic laser measuring tool and measure each of the walls in turn. Now you can mark the measurements in metres on your sketch.
While many rooms are a simple rectangle, others are more complex. Try and break down your floor plan into several smaller rectangles or squares to make it simpler to calculate the total floor area. Now you can multiply the width and length of each smaller square or rectangle and add up the totals to work out what the floor space is in square metres.
For circular shaped rooms, measure the rooms radius and multiply it by itself. Now multiply this figure by pi to find the floor area.
Factor in waste tiles
It is always a smart move to purchase extra tiles on your order to account for any errors. Floor tile experts advise adding at least an extra 10% for regular tiles and an additional 20% for plans involving large format tiles.
Calculate how many tiles you require
Study the tiles you want to use in the room and work out the area of an individual tile by multiplying its width and length. You can now divide the total floor area by the tile area of one tile to find the total number of tiles you need. Add your extra waste percentage and you know the number of tiles to order.
