It is widely accepted that the spaces in which we live, move and work can have a profound impact on our well-being.
The beauty, power and majesty some buildings embody speak to us of the past and its preoccupations, while affecting us deeply in the here and now.
Newer structures, built in more recent times, are likely to be plainer and more functional in design. Nevertheless, these can and should be made to speak to us as much as the grandiose buildings of the past. The installation of artistic, aesthetically engaging facades is a perfect way to achieve this.
There is an increasing demand for sustainability in building materials. Low-carbon production methods are increasingly prioritised. Materials with a long life and withstand the elements should be used where possible.
Safety concerns have rightly come to the fore following the horrific tragedy of the Grenfell Towers disaster. At Digital Ceramics, we are committed to ensuring that our cladding meets the highest standards of safety and complies fully with the regulations.
Our work on the new apartments on Wornington Crescent, Portobello Road, has safety at its heart. The front and rear elevation of the building will have cladding made from 1000mm x 500mm porcelain tiles, backed with fiberglass and lugged to fit a rainscreen system. Using our large format digital printer, we printed each individual image onto the tiles using ceramic pigment. We then kiln-fired the tiles to create a permanent UV stable solution.
