What is the difference between onglazed tiles and underglazed tiles?

The process of printing your design onto a custom ceramic tile differs depending on the application. There are various appealing factors for both underglaze and onglaze, depending on where the tiles are being used.

What is an onglaze tile?

Onglaze is the perfect finish for wall tiles, murals and feature pieces.

This type of tile is made using a pre-glazed tile. Your design is applied before being kiln-fired at a high temperature. This makes sure the design is integrated into the tile. We developed our internal processes to create high-quality tableware for the market. That’s thanks to its durable, fade-resistant makeup. It helps the product withstand a lot of use and washing.

This process quickly caught the eye of interior designers, artists, architects and more as it could be applied to large-scale projects, making artwork stand out for decades. A particular benefit for interior design specialists is that onglaze tiles can feature a variety of colours, replicating the desired design perfectly.

What is an underglaze tile?

Having an underglaze tile means that the decoration has been applied to the surface before being covered with a clear glaze. Underglazed tiles are created using four layers: the biscuit, an engobe slurry, the printed design and the top glaze. Geometric patterns and styles are complemented well using underglazed tiles. Underglazed tiles are typically more durable than onglaze tiles thanks to the way the decoration is sealed beneath a finishing glaze and on top of an engobe and biscuit.

Underglaze is ideal for floor tiles as an anti-slip rated glaze can be applied, giving greater grip underfoot.
