Wall tiles are water resistant, hard wearing and extremely easy to clean. Consequently, they are often favoured by room designers for many locations within buildings.
For example, wall tiles are perfect for rooms that involve water use like kitchens and bathrooms but also building areas that experience high levels of human traffic. However, before adding wall tiles, measuring is essential.
Preparation and equipment
To measure for wall tiles, you’ll need certain tools. These include a modern or traditional measuring device (digital or tape measure), a pencil, sketch pad and calculator or a personal device you can draw on and perform calculations like an iPad or other tablet.
Before measuring a wall for tiles, some preparation may be required. You can move objects and fixtures away from the wall that impede measuring activities. Using a laser measuring device can sometimes help avoid this step.
You can now use your drawing equipment to roughly sketch the room you wish to tile and mark windows, doors and other permanent obstructions on the plan.
Measuring the wall for tiles
Measure the length and the height of the wall, and double check your measurements for accuracy. To find the surface area of the wall in square metres, multiply the height by the length. Now, note down all details on your sketch.
Next measure any doors, windows and other assorted obstructions. Use the same process and measure each individual feature’s length and height, and multiply them to find their surface area. If there are multiple features like a window and a door, add their total areas together.
You can now subtract their total surface area from the wall area to find work out the square metre area that requires tiling.
How many wall tiles do your need?
Work out the surface area of a single wall tile by multiplying its length and width. Now divide the total area of wall space for tiling by the single tile’s area to calculate how many you need. Tiles can break during installation and may sometimes need to be cut to fit certain areas. As a result, it is recommended that you add an extra 10% worth of tiles to your order to account for such instances.
Marking the centre of the wall can help with determining tile layout. Remember to consider how tiles will fit around doors windows and obstructions.
